چکیده

In this paper we present a new physically motivated curve/region descriptor based on the solution of Helmholtz’s equation. The descriptor we propose satisfies the six principles set by MPEG-7: it has a good retrieval accuracy, it is compact, it can be applied in general contests, it has a reasonable computational complexity, it is rotation and scale invariant and provides an hierarchical representation of the curve from coarse to fine. In addition to these properties, the descriptor can be generalized in order to take into account also the intensity content of the image region defined by the curve. The construction of the descriptor can be coupled with a preprocessing step that enables us to describe a curve in an affine invariant fashion. The performance of our approach has been tested in the contest of affine invariant curve and region matching, both within a controlled experimental setup and also using real images. The experiments show that the proposed approach compares favorably to the state of the art curve/region descriptors. 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Contour Retrieval and Matching by Affine Invariant Fourier Descriptors

In the image plane, a 3 Dimensional movement of planar rigid object can be represented satisfactory by an affine motion of his boundary (the exterior contour) which we assume to be closed. The object movement can be described by a special affine transformation of the plane IR 2 . The extraction of invariant features under affinities is important in such procedure. Recently we have proposed a ne...

Drums and Curve Descriptors

In this paper we present a new physically motivated curve descriptor based on the solution of Helmholtz’s equation. The descriptor satisfies the six principles set by MPEG-7: it has a good retrieval accuracy, it is compact, it can be applied in general contexts, it has a reasonable computational complexity, it is robust and provides an hierarchical representation of the curve from coarse to fin...

Maximally Stable Local Description for Scale Selection

Scale and affine-invariant local features have shown excellent performance in image matching, object and texture recognition. This paper optimizes keypoint detection to achieve stable local descriptors, and therefore, an improved image representation. The technique performs scale selection based on a region descriptor, here SIFT, and chooses regions for which this descriptor is maximally stable...

Robust and Fully Automated Image Registration Using Invariant Features

This paper introduces a novel method for affine invariant matching using Zwickels that is especially well suited for images of man-made structures. Zwickels are sections defined by two intersecting line segments, dividing the neighborhood around the intersection point into two sectors. The information inside the smaller sector is used to compute an affine invariant representation. We rectify th...

An Experimental Comparison of Image Feature Detectors and Descriptors applied to Grid Map Matching

Applying computer vision feature detectors and descriptors to occupancy grids has important practical applications for the problem of grid map matching in mobile robot localization and mapping, although this approach has received little attention by the community. This review presents a thorough performance evaluation for several combinations of detectors (Harris, KLT, SIFT and SURF) and descri...
